Writing your own wedding vows is becoming more popular. There are a variety of reasons for this, including the feeling that writing your own vows is more intimate and personal. When it comes to writing your own wedding vows, there are not many hard and fast rules. The main one is that you tell your spouse what you will give of yourself to keep your marriage intimate, alive, and growing.
Studies have been conducted that show that men and women want many of the same things out of life. Intimacy is at the top of the list. Unfortunately, men and women have different views on how to achieve a truly intimate relationship. Men view sex as leading to intimacy and women view sharing their emotions openly and honestly as leading to intimacy. Neither sex has any solid proof that they know what the best way is to have an intimate relationship.
Writing your own wedding vows gives you the opportunity to let your spouse know exactly what steps you are prepared to take to achieve that intimate relationship you both crave. This is your chance to outline how you will work to keep your marriage alive and growing as it should rather than allowing complacency to kill it. In exchange, your spouse will tell exactly what steps he/she is willing to take toward the same goal. This gives you both a starting point as work to meet in the middle.
Another thing your might want to do is make your own bridal shower favors and write your own bridal shower invitations. This can add a personal touch to your bridal shower, and when choosing bridal shower gifts you might consider makeing them your self as well.
One thing that can help both of you when things get difficult is going back and rereading your wedding vows. Look at the things you promised to do and ask yourself if you are doing them. You may find that you can make adjustments and head off major problems while they are still just irritations.
