Hornby Model Train Origins
Hornby-made model trains are a renowned brand among millions of model train enthusiasts all over the world. Innovation, standardization, and interchangeability are just a few of the terms that can describe Hornby and its merchandise which can be traced down and credited to its creator Frank Hornby.}Modern ways of manufacturing toys during the early twentieth century was given new value by Frank Hornby because of his innovative ideas. The Hornby Railways Company was founded by Frank Hornby and primarily makes different scale model trains and accessories along with additional forms of scale models such as construction equipments.
The name Hornby Railways Co. wasn’t the original trade name for Frank Hornby’s model trains that we now know today. Instead, Hornby started a small manufacturing company he named Meccano Ltd. in 1908 and in less than two years, the company made profits that enabled Hornby to build additional Meccano factories in other parts of Europe.
Seven years before the founding of Meccano, Hornby applied for a patent he called “Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People” which was consist of models of trucks, cranes, and other models drawn from from construction equipments. The particular characteristic that Hornby’s scale models has is the interchangeability of parts that other toys during that period didn’t have. Afterwards, “Mechanics Made Easy” became the new name for Hornby’s model scale lineups. This is the kind of innovative idea Hornby products is acknowledged for which also started a common standard scale size for model trains.
Even during World War I, Meccano did not stop producing their popular model trains. In 1920, Hornby introduced a lineup of toy trains which had clockwork motors imported from a German company known as Marklin which in addition has the licensed right to manufacture products of Hornby. Only during World War II did manufacturing of Hornby model trains stopped. Manufacturing resumed when the war ended but production of model trains under the Meccano brand name stopped.
By 1925, Hornby presented model trains run by electricity powered by 100-250 volts which was later switched to six volts DC for safety’s sake. Production and introduction of a 00 scale, 12 volt DC model trains started in the 1930s and is now the most well-liked form of scale in the United Kingdom.
Popular railroading models from Hornby Railways are renowned as Lyddle End and Skaledale. Even though both have similarities when it comes to accessories, the Lyddle End has a scale of 1:76 which is slightly bigger than the Skaledale. Both Lyddle End and Skaledale models are modeled after specific scenes in England. Buildings and natural sceneries are captured and made available by the two main railroading models.
The Hornby brand name is also common in numerous parts of the world namely Europe, North and South America, and Australia.
In the US during the 1920’s, Hornby’s attempt to setup a factory was not as successful as other Hornby sites in Europe. Although, during the same era, a business venture aimed toward the US did not turn out fine for Hornby because of inadequate product features and the stock market crash of 1929.

The reliability, durability and quality of Hornby scale models made it possible for model train enthusiasts to take pleasure and take pride of their model train collections and how they build their track layouts complete with sceneries.
