The Locomotive Exchange Trials of 1948

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Shortly after nationalisation in 1948, the then recently formed British Railways Board (BRB) decided to carry out a comprehensive review of the locomotive stock it had just inherited from the ‘Big Four’ independent railway companies. It soon became apparent that the entire locomotive fleet was made up from hundreds of different class types, many of which were getting close to retirement or in some cases, were already life-expired. Immediately after starting the government-owned organisation needed to reduce costs as quickly and as practical as possible. Not an easy task with a war-battered railway. However, efforts began in earnest almost immediately and in its first year, the BRB had enlisted the services of the renowned locomotive engineer Robert A Riddles, formerly of the LMS, to take responsibility for the Mechanical & Electrical Engineering department. Riddles first task was developing a small range of new steam locomortive designs, which would eventually replace the older pre-nationalised classes.

Riddles’ opted for a plan of action which was to utilies the best pre-nationalisation designs and incorporate the best qualities of each into his new designs, thus procuring the best of the engineering feats from all of the former railway companies. His first move towards producing new designs were the ‘Locomotive Exchange Trials’. Riddles started his quest by choosing a number of express type locomotives from each of the newly-formed Regions and employing them on ‘foreign’ territory. As an example, LMS engines were run over the Southern Region where there were no water troughs. To compensate for this they were married together with four-axled ex-War Department tenders with larger water tanks. These were specifically given LMS lettering for the occasion. Similarly, ex-Southern Region locomotives used elsewhere were married together with ex-LMS tenders with water scoops. This yielded some important information for the design team on how suitable certain locomotive classes were to certain stretches of line.

Having completed the Locomotive Exchange Trials, Riddles’ Chief Draftsmen put pen to paper and began to shape the first of the then new ’standardised’ steam locomotives. Officially, these trials were to identify the best qualities of the four different approaches to locomotive design in order to incorporate them in the new BR standard designs. However, the testing lacked any real scientific value, and taking Riddles’ background into consideration and other political influences, it meant that LMS practice was largely followed by the new standard designs regardless, and it is not really surprising that virtually all of Riddles’ final products would closely resemble the designs pioneered by the LMS, in particular those locomotives which were designes of Stanier and Ivatt.

However, the trials served as a useful publicity stunt for BR to show the unity of the new British Railways. By 1950 the first express passenger locomotive design had been finalised at Derby and in the same year, the British Transport Commission placed an order with Crewe Works for the construction of twenty-four of the type. What emerged from Crewe on 2nd January 1951 was a 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive looking conspicuously like the Coronation class of locomotives designed by William Stanier, also previously with the LMS. The imposing engine, finished in a plain black scheme with no lining, was scheduled for a test run between its birthplace and Carlisle on 11th January 1951, a dynamometer carriage being one of the carriages it was to haul. Following the test run, which proved to be a promising start for the type, the locomotive, numbered 70000, was repainted into the much more familiar lined BR Brunswick Green and delivered to Marylebone station on the last but one day of January to be named. No. 70000 was appropriately called ‘Britannia’, after the female personification of the British Empire, and it marked a very promising step forward for BR.

To mark the Sixtieth Anniversary of the 1948 Locomotive Exchange Trials, in 2008 Hornby Railways released a Limited Edition Model of a 4-6-2 West Country Class Locomotive ‘Bude’ No 34006. This model, represents the classic pairing of a Southern Region Bulleid Pacific with a Stanier Tender. For the collectors out there, the Hornby R2685 West Country Class ‘Bude’ with Stanier Tender was only produced in a limited run of 2008 and each of the model trains came with a numbered Certificate of Authentication.

Wedding Photo How-to

Friday, July 31st, 2009

A co-worker has asked you to take pictures at her wedding, and you are worried because you’ve never done it before. They may have decided a professional photographer is too expensive and instead are relying on you to take pictures for them.

You feel the pressure, and want to make sure you do the best job possible. Here are some guidelines to help you from Jim Whitesell, a wedding photographer in Edmonton:

1. Use the best equipment possible

A small point-and-shoot camera is fine for capturing family memories, but doesn’t do as well as a digital SLR with an external flash. The focus time, shutter delay, and limited reach of the small built-in flash will all cause problems for you. If you do not own or have access to a digital SLR camera and external flash, you can probably rent them from a camera store. Be sure to test and practice with the camera before the wedding day! A professional will likely have multiple lenses as well, but this is often beyond the ability of a casual shooter.

2. Take at least two memory cards

Although it doesn’t happen often, memory cards can fail. Keeping an extra card with you is cheap insurance that will keep you shooting if your card does quit working. Be sure the cards are of ample size so you don’t run out of space half-way through the night. 4GB is the minimum size you should have with you.

3. Batteries, batteries, batteries

Be sure to charge the camera batteries the night before, and preferably have a second battery charged and ready. Most external flash units use AA batteries so have a couple extra sets of these, too.

4. Attend the rehearsal

Taking pictures at the rehearsal is the best way to be prepared for the pictures you’ll take at the actual ceremony. You’ll have a feel for where to position yourself for the best shots. While a professional wedding photographer won’t usually shoot at the rehearsal, they will often make an appearance to not only reassure the bride and groom that they are prepared for the next day but also to scope out the building. Their experience will enable them to know where the best shots are just by seeing the facility.

5. Posing the bridal party

When taking formal pictures of the bridal party, pay attention to the details. Make sure everyone’s face is visible, and pay attention to the placement of hands and feet. Pleasing poses are key.

6. Photographing the ceremony

If the wedding will take place inside a church, you’ll need to shoot without flash. Use a tripod to hold the camera steady or camera shake caused by longer exposure times will likely ruin the pictures.

7. Shooting the reception

If possible, try to get a shot or two of the reception hall before everyone arrives. Takes some shots of other details, too - like the head table decorations, cake, etc. Once things are underway, it’s always nice to go table-to-table and get pictures of all the guests.

8. Shoot the details

Take pictures of the little details. The rings, bridal bouquet, ring bearer, flower girl, bride’s shoes, etc. are all great details to capture and the bride will be quite pleased to have these.

9. Capture the fun

There are always fun, unplanned moments that make each wedding unique and memorable. Always have your camera ready to capture the moment!

10. Back up the photos

As soon as possible after the wedding, burn all the original images to a CD or DVD for safekeeping. Do this before you make any changes to them. If you accidentally delete an important picture or have a computer failure you’ll still have the originals to fall back on. Even a professional discount wedding photographer will make backups.

Your friends have entrusted you with a very important task. The pictures are the best way to remember the wedding and all the fun details. While a professional wedding photographer will do a better job, those on a tight budget may not have the ability to pay for one.

If you aren’t confident you can do a good job, why not suggest you pay for all or part of a professional photographer’s fee as your gift to the couple? And if you just happen to be near Edmonton, Alberta, I highly recommend you check out Jim Whitesell’s site for Edmonton wedding pictures.

Are You Ready for a Prepaid Visa Card for Travelling

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Moving around is one wonderful experience. Working all week long can be stressful due to the demands of your client or your boss. Today before you lose your mind from all the pressure, you can find a break from hectic life. You are able to traveling to top vacation spots you have never been in the country like Hawaii, Alaska, or Florida. Or you can check out destinations from closer countries Mexico, Canada, or Caribbean Islands. However, if you wish to go all out, then you can in all probability visit the African Safari, take a trip in the great places in Europe, look into the party scene in South America, or experience the attractions in Asia.

As traveling will allow you to see one or more destination for some days, you have to carefully prepare the matters that you will need. If your travel plan does not match or you forget something, then it may be more stressful than the work you have left behind, or it can simply be a disaster. One of things you will have to consider when going on vacation is your expenses. Of course, you know that this time is not the best time in our economy. This, however, should not hinder you from going on adventure tours or savoring the wonderful places. You will simply have to manage your monetary resources well. One way to do this is to bring your own prepaid visa travel cards.

The prepaid visa travel card is the perfect companion for all of the people born with itchy feet who do not like adding cash in their exploits. What the reason those people don’t like bring cash? Simple. They are not exactly familiar with the place and the people who dwell in that area. They might lose all the cash they have and in the process derail their adventure and relaxation. They are also afraid that they might overspend when purchasing souvenirs, tasting the goodies of the place or going through the adventures that the spot offers.

A Payango prepaid kreditkarte functions similar your usual debit or credit cards. You just have to present them to the places that honor Visa whenever you purchase something. These prepaid credit cards only start working when you have loaded the amount you plan to spend. This is perfect if you want to complete the experience of relaxing and adventurous traveling without over spending. It is also comforting to know that you are able to shop at a lot of places because Visa is good by millions of shops here and abroad. Whenever you have gone out of the limit, you have to reload them or else the prepaid cards stop working. This might mean a stop to your getaway, but you actually have to plan well and give away your money with caution.

You Can Find Quite A Few Cartoon Characters In Southern California

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

In recent months I’ve had the chance to go to most of the seven major theme  parks in So Cal. Between them all, you can immerse yourself in the world of a bunch of your favorite TV and movie characters.

Of course Disneyland is the first park that comes to mind, with Dumbo, Mickey, Goofy and the others. Your trip to Disneyland will be better if you do a little research at one of several great websites. Who doesn’t love the wonderful job Disney has done in creating a fictional universe of lovable characters?

Nearby Knott’s  Berry Farm has its own crew of lovable characters with Lucy, Snoopy and the Peanuts team at Camp Snoopy. Charlie Brown, Linus and the others fit  nicely into the personality of Knott’s Berry Farm.

Hit Universal Studios Hollywood and you can find Spiderman, Betty Boop, the Flintstones, Woody Woodpecker and a squadron of other beloved Universal characters that have been at the heart of many television shows and famous movies. Here is a  site that offers what the locals know about visiting the characters who live at Universal Studios.

The third park to visit for characters would be Six Flags Magic Mountain up in Valencia. The Six Flags roller coasters seem to be the biggest draw to the park for most visitors. It does not take long to figure out that the Looney Tunes people are in charge of public relations.

Here and there around the park you will find some of your favorites, like Daffy, Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam. The childrens’ area has attractions centered around these whacky celebrities, which is a nice break from the thrill rides that dominate the place. The characters are very charming and are pretty easy to find around the mountain.

Golf Carts For Sale and The Safety of the Riders

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

When you have researched a few golf carts for sale ads then one of the first things you must bare in mind is that there are safety features and rules apply to golf carts as well. It does not matter if you are looking at electric golf carts or gas golf carts they both come under the same safety precautions. When you do finally decide on a used golf cart to purchase see if the owner manual is still available. If not you may be able to contact the manufacturer of the make and provide them with a model number. They are sure to try to be of assistance in supplying you with a manual unless of course it is an older model.

There are some common sense rules when operating a golf cart.  Be sure to keep your hands and arms within the vehicle. It is true they do not travel all that fast but an injury could occur should the driver come near some brush or a tree. Make it a rule that neither you nor your passenger consume any alcohol when operating the cart. Although a small unit, it is still a motorized vehicle nonetheless. Never overload the cart. It is nerve-wracking to see five and six people hanging off a four-seat golf cart. If there are two bench seats then they are for four people if there is just one seat then it is meant for two. Be sure to learn and follow the safety rules.

How to: A Car Stereo Installation Guide

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Want to save some money? Ever wonder if you could do a car stereo installation yourself? Yes, you can do it yourself! Go ahead, spend that money on your hardware! Don’t spend it on labor. Besides, doing a car stereo installation yourself can be a very rewarding experience, not to mention you can learn a lot from it too. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing your “creation” in action, running smoothly and perfectly.

But be very careful, you really won’t want to damage your expensive hardware. Well, most car audio hardware are no-brainers to install, you’d find that most of the time the parts have specially shaped sockets and slots etc. and would only fit where it’s supposed to be installed. Still, it’s best to proceed methodically.

In a car stereo installation, you have to determine what kind of rig you’re going to put into your vehicle. If you’re a beginner, it’s best you do a car stereo installation if it’s just a simple system. You may want to leave the complicated stuff to the professionals, like installing delicate equipment like LCD panels, motorized parts etc. especially if it requires the creation of custom panels and such.

Head units are one of the easiest to do in a car stereo installation. Fortunately, most units follow the same size standards (DIN). In many cars, once the factory radio is removed the aftermarket radio will fit in the hole. In many other cars, a kit is needed if the factory hole is too big, or not deep enough. In some cases the dash has to be cut. Any car stereo store should have kits required for installation.

There are two types of mounting in a car stereo installation. ISO mounting is when the radio can be screwed to existing factory radio brackets, such as in most Japanese cars. Ring mounting is when an aftermarket radio comes with a metal ring that gets mounted to the factory radio hole or aftermarket kit via bendable tabs. In many cars, dash and trim rings have to be filed to enlarge the radio hole. Once the ring is installed, the radio slides in and is held by snaps. In most cases, special tools are required to remove the radio.

Speakers are very critical in a car stereo installation. No matter how expensive your speakers are, if they are not properly installed, the sound will not be up to par.

In a simple car stereo installation, you’ll probably be using speakers that fit into a factory location. Just make sure there are no gaps or holes. Sometimes building a wood or fiberglass baffle helps reduce holes and gives you much better sound. But always be careful when using power tools around speakers. Car stereo installation warranties usually don’t cover holes in speakers.

For unconventional speaker locations, sometimes metal has to be cut. You might want to leave this to the professionals, tools like plasma cutters and pneumatics drills are required. But if you’re going to insist, a pair of metal snips (left and right cut) will do.

A car stereo installation has to put up with vibrations and other noise sources in its environment. Even though it is impossible to eliminate these completely, there are products that will greatly decrease the noise and rattling, particularly on non-luxury cars. Liners, sprays and adhesive strips and even carpeting applied onto the panels can make a world of difference.

Lawn Fertilizer - How to Choose the Best Lawn Fertilizer

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

How to decide on anything organic now in today’s world can be extremely difficult. It seems that everything and everyone are stating that their products are organic and are good for the environment.

When it comes to gardening it can be a daunting task trying to decide on what type of lawn fertilizer is best for your garden or yard. Many people state that you can use anything from your food that you eat to make compost and then throw this on your grass. This is however not true.

If you are trying to use organic fertilizer and want to be the responsible person in your community or neighborhood you need to know how to choose the best lawn fertilizer. It is not okay to use anything organic for your yard or grass as certain things that are considered organic can be harmful.

So what are the basic needs when looking at how to choose the best lawn fertilizer?

The first thing that you should look at is whether the organic fertilizer is actually harmful. You do not want the fertilizer to contain meat, bones or oils. Basically if it came from the ground it should be okay to put it back in.

The second thing you need to look at is whether the fertilizer will be able to provide the essential nutrients from natural resources; this is basically the main idea of using organic fertilizers. You want the fertilizer to enrich your soil and in the long run will be able to promote strong grass and will help in the development of your roots.

The third thing you should look at is whether you will be able to use the fertilizer anytime. Today there are many fertilizer products that will allow you to fertilize your lawn or garden anytime of the season. This is extremely helpful where your seasons seem to be getting later and later. If you live in colder climates your still have different options when to fertilize but it is not year round.

Probably the most important aspect when deciding on what type of fertilizer to use whether it be organic lawn fertilizer or any type of fertilizer is whether the product is harmful or safe around children and pets. This is simply the most important aspect of fertilizing today. If it is not safe for your children or pets to be on the fertilized lawn then you need to look at a new product. Safety is the biggest issue today as a nice yard or garden pales in comparison to a lost child or pet. If you are not sure then you should be looking at organic fertilizer such as Scott’s organic lawn fertilizer or Scott’s organic choice products.

Remember when using any type of fertilizer that it does come in moderation. The best results will be had if you simply follow the instructions. Simply deviate from the plan and you could be doing more harm to your lawn and the environment.

Find out which is the best lawn fertilizer that passed our rigorous testing by visiting lawn fertilizer reviews.

Your Kitchen Will Have More Space With Shelving

Monday, July 27th, 2009

We will talk about plenty of types of storage systems you can put in your workshop area to make it more sensible. Garage storage shelves offers quite a few advantages that make them the superior pick among others.

Shelves are obviously very manageable. This makes it an simple to use storage space system where you can gather your most often used gear such as gardening or sports tools. Shelves are as well awfully economical because they employ only a very tiny area of your garage’s vertical space. And yet they still present plenty of storage space for your gear despite being space-saving. This is why it’s a great idea to create wall storage shelving and save room.

Storage space shelves are as well extremely versatile. They come in a wide range of configurations  to suit your wishes. Whatever you have to keep in your workshop, there is a shelving design for it. They are also available in diverse materials. For resilient, long-lasting storage shelves, you can select steel shelves that are not just strong but are attractive also. You can purchase engineering steel garage shelves in furniture shops. You can also find free-standing metal storage space systems whose shelves can be simply accustomed according to the dimension of the item you are going to put in storage.

Garage storage shelving are somewhat less pricey than most storage space systems. You can even build your own storage system applying simple household tools. If you fancy to do things on your own, you can try installing your own bathroom storage shelf with planks of wood and some tools. If you decide to build your own wood shelving, pick up hardwood for instance fir or pine. These wood types can without problems resist heavy loads and will generally last a long time.

These are just several of the bathroom storage shelves ideas you can consider. Also, you have an option to build metal shelving brackets and get the best possible storaging system.  Before you make any alterations in your bathroom, it is best if you thoroughly arrange every aspect. Make sure your strategy will be competent to maximize every inch of room in your workshop.
